The sac roe herring fishery takes place annually in March along the shores of Baranof Island on the outer coast of the Alaska Panhandle. The herring return here each year to spawn in the calm waters. Fishermen use large purse nets to catch these small, oily fish to harvest the roe (eggs), which are sold to various markets.
