The sparks of light that create the aurora appear very high in the atmosphere. Colors vary based on the composition of the elements. Green is the most common color of the aurora, but red, violet, blue, purple, pink, and yellow may also be visible to the human eye. The camera often does a better job of capturing the color than what the human eye can see.
