In Alaska, the boreal forest exits between the northern Brooks Range and the southern Coast Range mountains, covering most of Interior Alaska. It features a relatively low diversity of plant species, dominated by white and black spruce conifers and the deciduous paper birch, balsam poplar, and aspen trees.
