Wildland forest fires are common during Alaska's warmer summer months, especially in the dry Interior and Arctic regions. Nearly every year, air quality in towns and villages becomes very poor due to smoke and ash from nearby forest fires. Sometimes the fires can be extensive, covering thousands and even millions of acres.
