The tundra and taiga covering much of Alaska are a delicate yet thriving ecosystem. Many plants have evolved to deal with harsh conditions, which include a long, cold winter, but spring to life under the constant summer sunlight. Underlying permafrost (frozen ground) restricts the topsoil depth and limits tree growth.
