Interior Alaska is characterized by the boreal forest and expansive flat wetland areas bordered by mountains and interlaced with rivers. It is a dry climate overall, with a warm summer and, at times, a brutally cold winter season. Forest fires are common in the summer, and temperatures dip to minus 50 below zero in the coldest months.
