Kaktovik is a Native Alaska Inupiat Eskimo village situated on Barter Island along the Arctic Coast of the Beaufort Sea. A few hundred residents live in the community, and in recent years it has become famous for the polar bears that visit the town to feed on whale carcasses while they wait for the Beaufort Sea to freeze in late October.
